A Time of Wonder - for both of us...

So Jake, you're at scout camp now. I was so proud of you when I dropped you off yesterday - you were so confident and comfortable, so ready to be there, on your own. It's not your first time away from home, I realize. Just the first time that you've been away with no adults that you know: no parents, grandparents or even sitters that you're famliar with. Nevertheless, I know you're having the time of your life. I know after dropping you off that you'll not want to leave, you'll wish we'd signed you up for an entire week, or even two. And maybe we will next year.

So, I've spent the last 24 hours wondering what you're doing. What did you eat for dinner last night? How much giggling have you and Alex and TomHenry and Zeb been doing? How did your swim test go and did you have a campfire last night? Mostly, I've wondered about the nighttime. Did you get any sleep? Were you at all afraid to get up in the middle of the night and head out to the latrine in the dark with your flashlight? Did you wake up at the crack of dawn, or earlier? Maybe they got you up early for a 'polar bear swim'?

And this afternoon I kept checking the weather online. Is it raining at camp? Will it rain tonight? It poured here in the afternoon, with lots of exciting thunder and lightening. I know you love thunder and lightening and downpours as much as I do, but how about when you're at camp? Where did you go when it started? Did they huddle all of you into one of the old buildings? Were you sent into your tents?

Hey, have you picked up your reading book at all? Doubtful. I'll bet you've already had some archery practice. Any bebe shooting yet? Boating? Okay, okay, I guess that's enough of the questions.

Well, I can tell you, I'm anxious to come and get you already and it's only been one day. I can't wait to hear all about it. Can't wait to see your freckles and your blue eyes. Can't wait to do all of your laundry...
Love, Mom.
