Last night, at just about midnight, your father put a movie in the dvd player in our room, which we proceeded to watch even though I was so tired that I had to hold my eyelids open with the barrette from my bedside table. We quickly discovered it was a movie about children living in a refugee camp near a village on Iraq’s border with Turkey, during this current war. You may not remember “this current war” much when you grow up because it is taking place so far away from here, and because hopefully, it will be over long before you are really old enough to comprehend what it’s about – not that many of us are sure what it’s about now, and not that it hasn’t already lasted three years longer than anyone ever expected…
Anyway, the movie was not very pleasant, to be honest. The children in the movie made money (very little money) by very carefully disarming explosive mines in the minefields that surrounded their camp, and then selling them in a nearby marketplace. Most of the children in the movie were missing one or two limbs because of accidents with the mines, and it appeared that very few of them had parents.
There were so many parts of this movie that made me feel sad, and very anxious about our life in this world the way it is now. I had to get up and go into your rooms and look at you both. I do this every night before I go to sleep, but last night I HAD to do it. I laid down next to each of you, one at a time, just for a few minutes, hugged you, smelled and kissed your little faces and then went back to bed. Even though I am the grownup and you are the “little ones”, it is the two of you that give me strength when the world seems too scary or out of control. Without the two of you, my life would be empty and just those few moments looking at you sleeping are enough to remind me how full it is and that everything is really okay. Love, Mom

Comment on Question of the Day:
A good question, indeed...it seems that we have smaller & smaller mobile devices for individual connectivity...so, will TVs be tiny, hand-held monitors? Sunglasses with a viewing screen on the lens and an ear piece on the arm?
On the other hand, our TVs seem to get bigger & bigger in screen size. I'm amazed at how little space a 40-something inch flat screen can take up now that they've figured out how to eliminate that tube thing. We could have entire walls that are high-definition televisions, only playing what we want them to play.
I wonder how much our cable bills will be in 25 years...and if any channels will be free with the right set of bunny ears. And, will there be any free radio left?
What will we be watching in 25 years? Will "The Wizard of Oz" still be on ABC once a year? I, for one, hope so.
I am beginning to think that the images will just get bigger and bigger, but the mechanics will continue to get smaller. I'm hoping that all components, other than the screne, will be able to be in one unit, customizable to the particular set-up (no more cable boxes, DVD players, etc.) I see the screne's going away and being replaced by a projection system. I see the images being projected on full walls instead of in some sort of box. The decor issue will become how to get your projection wall to blend with the rest of your house. I also think the remote will go away, at least the hand-held type that gets lost so easily. One control panel with all the necessary buttons will be located in a place convenient to the viewer.
I can't see the cable companies giving way, but wouldn't it be nice if we could just watch whatever we wanted whenever, and save and replay, etc?
